Job Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Specialist in General Surgery to join a leading healthcare facility in Oman. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive surgical care, including pre-operative evaluation, operative management, and post-operative follow-up for a wide range of general surgical conditions. This role demands clinical excellence, strong decision-making abilities, and a commitment to patient safety and evidence-based practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough pre-operative assessments, review detailed medical histories, and order/interpret diagnostic tests (imaging, laboratory work) to determine surgical candidacy and plan interventions.
- Perform a broad spectrum of general surgical procedures including but not limited to abdominal, gastrointestinal, hernia, breast, thyroid, and soft tissue surgeries.
- Manage emergency surgical cases such as acute appendicitis, bowel obstruction, perforated viscera, and trauma laparotomy.
- Provide comprehensive post-operative care, monitor recovery, manage complications, and coordinate multidisciplinary follow-up.
- Participate in surgical oncology procedures and multidisciplinary tumor boards as required.
- Supervise and mentor junior medical staff, residents, and nursing teams in surgical techniques and patient management protocols.
- Maintain accurate and timely electronic medical records (EMR), operative notes, and discharge summaries in compliance with hospital standards.
- Adhere strictly to infection control, surgical safety checklists (WHO), and quality improvement initiatives.
- Engage in continuous professional development, clinical audits, and research activities to enhance surgical outcomes.
Required Qualifications & Credentials
- Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
- Board Certification / Fellowship in General Surgery (e.g., Arab Board, FRCS, American Board, or equivalent).
- Valid medical license to practice in Oman (or eligibility for Oman Medical Specialty Board registration).
- Minimum 3-5 years of post-fellowship clinical experience in general surgery within a tertiary care or high-volume hospital setting.
- Proven track record of independent operative experience across core general surgery procedures.
- Current BLS/ACLS and ATLS certification.
Technical Competencies
- Advanced proficiency in laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques (diagnostic and therapeutic).
- Expertise in open surgical approaches for complex abdominal and emergency cases.
- Strong command of surgical critical care principles, including ventilator management, hemodynamic monitoring, and sepsis protocols.
- Familiarity with enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways and fast-track protocols.
- Competence in endoscopic procedures (upper/lower GI endoscopy) is advantageous.
- Proficiency with hospital information systems (HIS) and electronic health records (EHR) platforms.
