Role Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced and detail-oriented Senior Radiation Safety Officer to join our team in Qatar. This senior-level position is responsible for advising on and developing effective safety strategies, standards, and procedures in the field of Radiation Safety, ensuring the protection of personnel, the public, and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. The successful candidate will play a critical role in shaping radiation protection programs and ensuring full compliance with national and international regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve comprehensive radiation safety strategies, policies, standards, and operational procedures across the organization.
- Oversee and ensure the strict implementation of all radiation safety protocols to minimize risks to staff, patients, and the general public.
- Conduct thorough radiation risk assessments and environmental monitoring to identify potential hazards and implement corrective actions.
- Advise senior leadership and departmental managers on all matters related to radiation protection, regulatory compliance, and best practices.
- Manage and supervise radiation monitoring programs, including personnel dosimetry, area monitoring, and contamination surveys.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable national and international regulations, including guidelines set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and local Qatari regulatory bodies.
- Lead radiation safety training and awareness programs for all employees working in or around radiation areas.
- Investigate radiation incidents, near-misses, and overexposures, and prepare detailed reports with recommended corrective and preventive measures.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of radiation sources, safety audits, inspections, and regulatory submissions.
- Coordinate with external regulatory authorities during inspections, audits, and licensing processes.
- Evaluate and approve the safe use, storage, transportation, and disposal of radioactive materials and radiation-emitting equipment.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Health Physics, Radiation Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related scientific discipline.
- Extensive professional experience in radiation safety, health physics, or a related field, with a proven track record in a senior or supervisory capacity.
- In-depth knowledge of radiation protection principles, including the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) concept and dose optimization techniques.
- Strong understanding of national and international radiation safety regulations, standards, and codes of practice.
- Proficiency in the use of radiation detection and monitoring instrumentation.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with the ability to manage complex safety scenarios.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear technical reports and deliver training sessions.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and drive a culture of safety across the organization.
Preferred Skills
- Professional certification in Radiation Protection (e.g., Certified Health Physicist – CHP, or equivalent).
- Experience working in healthcare, industrial, or nuclear facility environments.
- Familiarity with radiation emergency preparedness and response planning.
- Knowledge of radioactive waste management procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Experience with regulatory liaison and audit management in a radiation safety context.
